Journey of Light: Photography Exhibition by Okamoto Takashi

About the Exhibition
This exhibition marks EVERRICH’s first collaboration with a Japanese artist. Through photography as a bridge for cultural exchange, it opens a dialogue of light and shadow between Taiwan and Japan. Rooted in the longstanding cultural ties between the two countries, the exhibition takes light as its shared language, revealing subtle resonances in their landscapes, cultures, and emotions while conveying the warmth and friendship that continue to connect them.

Inspired by the films of Hsiao-hsien Hou, Okamoto Takashi relocated to Taiwan and has made Hualien his creative home, where he has spent years photographing the ever-changing sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. Through his lens, sunrise is more than a natural phenomenon; it becomes a meditation on time, memory, and life. As light and shadow shift, they illuminate not only the island’s dawn but also the artist’s enduring longing for his homeland in Japan.

The exhibition is built around three major series, Light of Sakura (櫻之光), Kyoto Geisha (京都藝伎), and The First Light of Hualien (花蓮日初之境), creating a journey of color that transcends geography. From the gentle transitions of Kyoto’s cherry blossoms at dawn and dusk, to the fleeting presence of geisha in the narrow streets of the ancient capital, and finally to the first light rising over the Pacific in Hualien, the three series weave together hues of gold, rose, and deep blue to capture the awakening of the earth while expressing the delicate emotional connections shared by Taiwan and Japan.

Okamoto Takashi approaches photography as a form of visual journaling, using light as his brush and color as his poetry. Blending Eastern aesthetics with personal experience, he transforms fleeting moments into timeless images. As viewers observe these works, they are invited to move across time and place, encountering memory through color and experiencing the quiet, enduring connections that flow between cultures.

Journey of Light is more than a photography exhibition. It is an exploration of light, time, and culture, inviting viewers to discover one another, and themselves, between Taiwan and Japan.
