EVERRICH has long been committed to sharing and promoting the richness of Taiwanese culture with travelers from around the world. This exhibition highlights rural community life and features works by renowned artist Chiu-tai Chang, often referred to as the “Millet of Taiwan.” For decades, Chang has portrayed Taiwan’s land and the figures of its farmers, recording the everyday rhythms of rural life and field labor through warm, unpretentious brushwork. Through this exhibition, we invite you to discover the vitality of Taiwan’s countryside and the enduring bond between people and the land.

One of Taiwan’s Most Revered Living Artists — Chang Chiu-Tai (1938– )
Born into a farming family, Chang Chiu-Tai served as an elementary school principal throughout his career, earning the affectionate title of “Principal Chang.”

Having spent his life in the Hakka communities of Miaoli, he has quietly witnessed the changing seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Over more than seventy years of painting, he has preserved the hidden beauty of Taiwan’s rice fields and documented agricultural traditions that are gradually disappearing. His works capture farming scenes found nowhere else in the world, safeguarding a precious visual record of Taiwan’s rural heritage.

For this reason, Principal Chang Chiu-Tai, often referred to as “Taiwan’s Jean-François Millet,” in recognition of his lifelong devotion to portraying rural life and farming communities.

Although only a selection of his paintings is presented in this exhibition, each work is like a lyrical pastoral poem. We hope these sincere and evocative paintings will allow you to appreciate the unique charm, warmth, and enduring spirit of Taiwan’s subtropical countryside.
