Stitching Through Time: The Embroidered Legacy of Guang Cai, Tainan

2025.08.15 - 2025.10.15

Historically known as an ancient capital city, Tainan has long stood as a cradle of craftsmanship and the birthplace of Guang Cai. Inheriting the intricate traditions of hand embroidery, Guang Cai has devoted decades to religious textiles, cultural restoration, and the art of everyday fabric. The founder, Mr. Yu-Chuan Lin, dedicated 67 years to this craft, producing masterpieces that have graced temples, folk rituals, and cultural landmarks across Taiwan, laying a firm foundation for the nation’s legacy of embroidery. Today, his daughter and successor, Chieh-Yu Lin, carries this tradition forward, leading a new generation of artisans who are both safeguarding and innovating the art form. In recent years, Guang Cai has ventured beyond traditional boundaries, collaborating with artists, scholars, and contemporary designers to integrate embroidery into fashion, installation art, and cultural merchandise—allowing this ancient craft to flourish in modern contexts.

This exhibition explores how embroidery continues to evolve toward new perspectives through material, form, and cultural dialogue. Each work is a quiet yet vivid response to the land, its people, and the rhythms of daily life. Tradition is never a relic of the past - it moves with us, resilient and graceful. We invite you to embark on this cultural journey, where threads become storytellers and the spirit of Tainan’s embroidery unfolds stitch by stitch.
