Auspicious New Life: Divine Spirits, Mythical Beasts, and Emotional Bonds — A Solo Exhibition by Wei-Jen Tsai
2025.08.06 - 2026.02.05

At the intersection of intimacy, faith, and imagination, Tsai sculpts characters that lie between folk iconography and personal narrative, using acrylic and paper-mache as his primary media.

The works in this exhibition span from the Double Joy series, which explores themes of attachment, to pieces such as Taiwan’s Guardian Beast, Out of the Tiger’s Mouth / Leaping Over the Dragon Gate, and Longevity/Blessings/Wealth, which symbolize blessings and positive transformation. Each work responds to the question of how the language of visual foldk art can be used to tell stories of depth and of the human condition.

These characters are neither traditional deities nor mere mascots; they are embodiments of memory and our inner landscapes. Through their sculpted forms, they open a dialogue about identity, relationships, and guardianship— providing the audience with gentle, yet important understanding of the people and culture of this land.

Wei-Jen Tsai (1991)
Currently based in Tainan, Tsai draws inspiration from folk culture and everyday life.
Taiwan is an island steeped in ritual. From religious processions and incense offerings to festive ceremonies, these detailed practices embody our collective emotions and memories. Through exaggerated, transformed bodies, intricate motifs, and divine imagery, Tsai appropriates and reconstructs the visual language of folk beliefs, weaving a local tension between the sacred and the secular, the imagined and the real. His creations are acts of memory re-encoding, translating dormant traditions into contemporary language to awaken a shared spirituality and sense of identity.
